Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this case study is to report the reduction of trigeminal neuralgia attacks in a patient who underwent NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic care.

Clinical Features: A 58 year-old female who had been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia six years prior by a neurologist, sought care at National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) clinic. She had been taking anticonvulsive medication to control the painful attacks which occurred above her right eye, but when they were no longer effective, she felt it was time to try something new.

Interventions and Outcomes: The protocol employed by the NUCCA doctor included postural analysis, functional leg length analysis and x-ray analysis.  During her nine weeks of care, the patient reported improvement in symptomatic complaints and had not experienced an attack of trigeminal neuralgia.

Conclusions: This case does demonstrate promise for the successful implementation of upper cervical chiropractic care in the management of trigeminal neuralgia, however there is certainly a strong need for further research to support this claim.

Key Words:  Trigeminal neuralgia, tic douloureux, NUCCA, chiropractic, adjustment, upper cervical, subluxation
